Hypotonic sport beverage has an osmolarity slightly below 270 mOsmol/ kg. The beverage containing carbohydrate 15 to 20 minutes before the event provides extra dietary glucose without stimulating insulin release.
Most of the popular sports drinks are formulated to have an osmolality close to that of body fluids and are promoted as isotonic drinks, but there is good evidence that hypotonic solution may be more effective when rapid rehydration is desired.
Inexpensive and readily available hypotonic sport drinks can be made by diluting orange juice with three parts water and adding 1 g of salt.
