Safflower is a highly branched, herbaceous, thistle-like annual plant with many long sharp spines on the leaves. It is a highly branched plant, with heights between 30cm and 150cm. Each branch has from one to five globular flower heads, with yellow, orange, or red flowers. The flower heads also contain 15-20 small seeds.
In recent years, it became apparent that the safflower could be used for more than just yellow and red pigment for dye and that it offered considerable health benefits. Safflower also contains chemical compounds that might help prevent blood clots, widen blood vessels, lower blood pressure, and stimulate the heart.
Safflower is a popular herb among the Native Americans, the Hopi tribe known to color their bread with Safflower. Safflower blossoms also were used in tea infusions intended to facilitate the expulsion of phlegm and to soothe symptoms of fever and jaundice.
Safflower tea is perhaps most famous for its ability to help lower cholesterol and improve the overall health of the heart. The herb is full of linoleic acid, and it’s this fatty acid that contributes to reducing cholesterol in the body, which in turn, prevents heart disease.
Safflower assists with circulation and is often used to treat poor circulation and blood clots. It’s also effective when used to ease obstructed menstrual flow.
It is believed that drinking safflower tea would also calm hysteria, panic attacks, pain, measles, and topical skin conditions characterised by eruptions.
