Aquavit, known as a Scandinavia’s cross-national drink and for its contribution to the world’s array of liquors, was first sold in the 16th century as a medicinal potion. It is popular in Sweden, Norway, and Denmark.
Its official names are aquavit – from Norway and akvavit –from Denmark. The word schnapps is from an ancient Norwegian word meaning ‘to snap up or gulp’ and the traditional way to drink is ice cold, in a single gulp. In Norway it served at room temperature.
Aquavit comes from the Latin words aqua – water and vitae – life and was initially produced with intention of providing long life.
Aquavit is made from potatoes and flavored with orange peel and several spices, including anise, fennel, caraway and coriander. It is usually 42% to 45% alcohol by volume.
Depending on the Scandinavia country in which it is produced aquavit is a clear, colorless to golden colored liquor flavored. It makes a bracing aperitif when served ice cold in small glasses.
It is thought to aid in the digestion of heavy or rich foods.
Another beverage – one spiced with cloves, ginger, cardamom and mace, haves been known since the mid eighteen century as aqua mirabilis, Latin for wonderful water.
Aquavit is traditionally served with appetizers but it also can be served as an after dinner drink.
