The explorer Marco Polo is responsible for bringing the herbs to Europe sometime during the 12th century.

Ginseng in the United States was not considered of any medical value until about 1905, but in China it is and has been highly prized for medical purpose and large quantities of the root are exported to that country.

Ginseng is mentioned in the oldest Chinese pharmacopoeia, Sheh-Nung Pen Tsao Ching, and other Chinese texts dated back to ancient times.

Ginseng may have been known in Chinese ethnopharmacology for as many as 5000 years. It also said that ginseng was recognized as a qi tonic herb about the same times.

In 196 AD, written in Sen Nung’s Materia Medica ginseng was described as a nontoxic herb that brighten eyes, opens heart and sharpen the wits.

Panax ginseng has been used for important oriental medicine since ancient time, owing to its tonic properties. During that times, ginseng was considered a royal plant, reserved by Asian rulers for their own particular use. During the chin dynasty in China, people caught stealing the Emperor’s ginseng were beheaded, their family and belongings confiscated.

Currently ginseng is promoted as a tonic capable of invigorating the user physically, mentally, and sexually.
