Pomegranate juice health benefits

The health benefits of pomegranate juice are gaining attention. Like green tea, pomegranate is also rich in polyphenols. Drinking pomegranate juice on a regular basis has been linked to lowering LDL cholesterol and reversing arterial hardening, a known cause of heart disease and heart attacks.

According to a 2006 study published in the Journal Atherosclerosis, the sugars in pomegranate juice, did not worsen blood sugar levels in the adults who consumed several ounces of pomegranate juice daily for three months. In fact, pomegranate juice reduced the risk of atherosclerosis.

The clinical studies in vitro indicated that ellagitannins as a major polyphenols accounting for 92% of antioxidant activity in the pomegranate juice.

Commercial pomegranate juice prepared from aril, peel and seed contains high levels of gallotannin, quercetin, kaempferol, lutrolin, glycoside, catechin and epicatechin, however, punicalagin, a member of the tannin family, and ellagic acid are the most abundant polyphenols in pomegranate juice. Pomegranate juice also is a good source of vitamin C, pantothenic acid and potassium.

One study from Loma Linda University suggested that administration of pomegranate juice to mice genetically engineered to develop Alzheimer’s reduced the amount of toxic beat-amyloid protein found in the brains of these mice at autopsy.

Many recent studies have shown potential antioxidant effects of pomegranate in reducing heart disease and cancer risk, eliciting antimicrobial, anti-diarrheal and antiulcer activities, increasing epididymal sperm concentration and reducing abnormal sperm rate. Its lower blood pressure and help keep arteries clear and healthy.

According to Clinical Cancer Research published in 2006, pomegranate juice has a beneficial effect on prostate specific antigen one of the lab markers for prostate cancer.
