Cranberry juice can prevent urinary tract infection

There is good evidence that cranberry juice prevents and may treat urinary tract infection.

Scientists believe that one of the main ways that cranberries prevent urinary tract infections is by inhibiting the adherence of pathogens on the surface of the bladder.

Cranberry juice contains proanthocyanidins that interfere with E. coli adherence to the urothelium.

Research by University of British Columbia, Vancouver showed that cranberry juice with high concentrations of proanthocyanidins appears to be effective in the prevention of pediatric nonfebrile urinary tract infections.

Quality cranberry juice also produces hippuric acid in the urine, which acidified the urine and inhibits bacterial growth.

The other interpretations is that it appears that the most common bacterium responsible for urinary tract infection, E. coli produces constituent known as adhesins to anchor to tissues and that there are anti-adhesin factors in cranberry juice.
